Missed call text back, UK: what it does and what it misses

If you are a tradesperson, a missed call is usually a job that went to whoever picked up next. Missed call text back is one answer to that. It is not the only one, and it is worth knowing where it stops working before you pay for it.

What it actually is

Missed call text back does one thing. A call comes in, nobody answers, and the system sends the caller a text — typically something like “Sorry we missed you, we’re on a job. What do you need?” The caller can reply by text, and you pick that up when you are off the ladder.

It is popular with trades for an obvious reason: you cannot answer a phone with both hands full, and the customer who rang you is almost certainly ringing three other people from the same search results page.

The part most pages leave out

A text-back system can only react to a missed call it can see. That means the call has to pass through a number the system controls. In practice that is a business number that diverts to your mobile, so the platform sees the call arrive, sees that it was not answered, and sends the text.

If customers ring your personal mobile directly, with no diversion in place, nothing happens. There is no missed call for the system to detect. This is the single most common reason people buy a text-back service and then find it never fires, so it is worth checking before you sign up rather than after.

Check what your own number does today

We will ring your mobile once, unannounced, during working hours, then text you exactly what a new customer would have got. It is free, one check per number, and it tells you whether you have a gap worth paying to close.

Text back versus having the call answered

These get sold as the same thing and they are not. A text back recovers a caller who had already given up. Answering the call means they never gave up in the first place.

The honest summary: text back is a good fallback and a poor substitute. If you only ever miss the occasional call, it is enough. If you are missing calls every day because you are on the tools every day, you want the call answered.

What Aria does instead

Aria is an AI receptionist. The call is answered rather than missed: Aria picks up in your business’s name, asks what the job is, where it is and when they need it, and passes it to you. You get the detail without stopping work, and the caller gets a response while they still care.

You also get a dedicated UK business number that forwards to your mobile, which is the same plumbing a text-back service needs — so your personal number stays off your van, your invoices and your Google listing.

One compliance point worth knowing

Texting someone back about the call they just made to you is a service message. Using that same number later to send offers is marketing, and under UK PECR marketing texts need a lawful basis and a working opt-out. Plenty of small operators collect numbers through a text-back box and then start promoting to them, which is where the problem starts. If you plan to market to past customers later, build that on consent from the beginning.

Questions

What is missed call text back?
A call to your business goes unanswered and the system automatically texts the caller, usually saying you are busy and asking what they need. They can reply by text instead of ringing someone else.
Does it work on a mobile?
Only if the system can tell the call was missed. That needs the call to route through a number the platform controls, which normally means a business number diverting to your mobile. A call made straight to a personal mobile with no diversion cannot trigger anything.
Is a text back better than having the call answered?
It is a fallback. It recovers a caller who would otherwise be gone, but it still asks the customer to type out their job. Having the call answered captures it while the caller is still interested.
What does it cost in the UK?
Most UK providers bundle it into a monthly plan rather than charging per message, so compare the monthly fee. Aria answers the call rather than only texting back, and plans start at £59 a month.
Do I need consent to text someone who rang me?
Replying about their own enquiry is a service message, not marketing. Sending them promotions later is marketing, and that needs a lawful basis and a working opt-out under PECR.
